Writing

I was lucky enough to get a media pass to Feast Portland, one of my absolute favorite food festivals, and spent a long weekend going from one fun, delicious and impeccably planned event to another. My riff on a recap, highlighting my top home cooking tips gleaned from Feast, is live on The Daily Meal.

The first published essay in what I’m thinking will be my next book project–a nonfiction collection all about food. Thanks to Edible Vineyard for having me again.

A happy distraction. A pocket of (sometimes hilarious) magic. I’m such a goat yoga believer and wrote about the experience in my latest for Paste Magazine.

My essay ‘Sandplain Grassland’, about my time as a food-writer-in-residence at the FARM Institute & Noepe Center for Literary Arts on Martha’s Vineyard, was published in Edible Vineyard’s Spring 2016 issue and is now available online. This is the first piece I’ve ever had illustrated and I just love all of them although the one of Elvis the muscovy duck has my heart. All he wanted was to nip shoes and eat cracked corn and waddle around in the sun.

Honored to have been nominated for a Pushcart Prize for the past two years—in 2014 for “Becoming an Outdoorswoman” (published in Joyland Magazine), and in 2015 for “The Keeper” (published in Bodega Magazine).

I’m thrilled and honored to have been selected as the inaugural Farm Scholarship recipient from the Noepe Center for Literary Arts in Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard. I’ll be spending two weeks on the island in September, working at the Farm Institute in the mornings and writing.

My love letter to the quahog is up at Serious Eats.

BuckteethStudents in my Food Writing class last term composed, designed, and edited a new online food magazine called Buckteeth. From an interview-driven piece on wasabi farming on the Oregon Coast to a personal essay about Chinese New Year and dumpling-making, its inaugural issue is loaded with food writing you can sink your teeth into. Check it out!

I come in at number four on Her Kind’s top 111 “firsts” in eleven words. Online here. I guess it didn’t matter that mine was only ten…

  1. I am working my way thru your writing and absolutely love it. Grateful for the opportunity. I can picture you in your little studio, smiling that smile when you nail it. Can’t wait get my hands on the novel.
